Our midwives and doctors support you sensitively through every step of the birth and create an atmosphere of security and comfort. We provide individual, family-centred obstetric care. Our birthing rooms offer a warm and welcoming environment in which families can feel at ease. Empathy and warmth are guiding principles of our work. Experienced doctors, experienced midwives and anaesthetists are available for you around the clock. We follow current guidelines, attend congresses and provide continuous further training. We offer you the greatest possible safety thanks to a high level of medical expertise with many specialist physicians. This is demonstrated by our above-average results in quality assurance, our low transfer rate and low episiotomy rate. We continue to work on this.

Every woman is different! We offer various methods of birth, from natural birth to caesarean section. Our experienced midwives and doctors provide personal, individual care tailored to your needs and wishes.

We respect the right of every woman and every couple to choose and to decide. We do not carry out examinations without asking and certainly not unnecessarily. In our obstetric outpatient clinic you can discuss your wishes in advance with a doctor or a midwife. We read your birth plans – much of what they contain is a matter of course for us. We attach great importance to close and good communication during preparation for birth, during the birth and in the postnatal period.

We are convinced that pregnancy and birth are something special and at the same time completely natural. We promote gentle and natural birthing methods, always with safety in mind. Technology is only used when medically necessary. We take measures and train our team to prevent birth injuries; episiotomies are rarely necessary. We support and promote the mother–child relationship through early bonding, i.e. with us, mother and baby have plenty of undisturbed skin-to-skin contact after the birth. As a family, you can settle in together in peace. As a Baby-Friendly maternity hospital, we want to give you the best possible start to breastfeeding.

Admittedly, contractions hurt. At the same time, your body is designed to cope with giving birth. Many of the women who give birth with us do not need any pain relief. And if you would like relief, we can draw on a wealth of pain relief options, tailored to your wishes and needs at that moment. These start with natural methods such as breathing techniques, hypnobirthing, warmth in the relaxation bath, heat pads, acupuncture, acupressure, massage and TENS. In addition, we offer a modern nitrous oxide (gas and air) device for short-term relief.

Of course, there are strong and stronger pain relievers that may also be given during the birth process and are very effective. An epidural (PDA) can be placed around the clock by experienced anaesthetists. We offer various methods for this. We will advise you if required.

As the first hospital in Freiburg – and for a long time the only one – we are certified for optimal mother–child bonding and breastfeeding support. What does that mean? Here, the well-being of your child comes first. We support mother–child bonding, your baby's development and breastfeeding. We train all our staff regularly so that they can support you and your children competently. With us, mother and baby have plenty of undisturbed skin-to-skin contact. You will receive proven tips for relaxed breastfeeding and plentiful milk production. If you choose a different form of feeding, we will advise you individually on bottle-feeding and building a bond. 24-hour rooming-in is a matter of course for us. We help you to understand your child's signals and to respond to them lovingly. After your stay in hospital, we invite you to breastfeeding cafés and parent–child meetings.

We go even further: in addition to our competent postnatal nurses, specially trained breastfeeding and lactation consultants (IBCLC) look after you and your baby if needed, for an optimal start to breastfeeding. Our experienced team of specialist doctors, midwives and nurses is available to you around the clock. Our emergency teams are ready at all times to act quickly in unforeseen situations. If necessary, an emergency caesarean section can be performed within a few minutes, directly in the delivery suite. We regularly train for these and other special situations in interdisciplinary team exercises with the anaesthesia team, so that we are fast in an emergency.

Our hospital is easy to reach by public transport, bicycle or car, with convenient parking in the multi-storey car park. If you need to get here quickly, our stork parking space is ready for you. The postnatal period begins in friendly single or double rooms with a lovely view over the Mooswald forest. Your baby stays with you – “rooming-in” is a matter of course for us. If you wish, you can enjoy the first days with your newborn in our comfortable family rooms, which offer peace and privacy. You can enjoy good, healthy food for the whole family from our buffet, made with organic ingredients and sourced from regional producers wherever possible.

We offer comprehensive support, from preparation for birth to postnatal care. Our wide range of antenatal courses prepares you optimally for the birth and the time afterwards. We also provide caring and competent support after the birth, including breastfeeding counselling and postnatal recovery courses. An experienced team of paediatricians is on hand to ensure the health of your newborn. Paediatricians in private practice look after you and your baby on the maternity ward and offer the U2 check-up (U2-Untersuchung) on site. For years, we have worked closely with the neonatology department of the University Hospital. In an emergency, our colleagues reach us within a few minutes.
