For your thyroid

Welcome to the Thyroid Centre
of the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg
Thyroid disorders are common. In Germany, for example, one in three people develops pathological changes of the thyroid gland during their lifetime.
The possible clinical pictures are very diverse. Against this background, it makes sense for thyroid disorders to be diagnosed and treated by doctors from different specialties and with different areas of expertise. Besides the personal competence and experience of the doctors involved, interdisciplinary coordination, consultation and cooperation are above all important for successful treatment.
In many cases, surgery is not needed to treat a thyroid disorder. If it is, however, it is all the more important that the enormous significance of the thyroid gland for the whole organism is taken into account when the operation is performed. In addition, the delicate anatomical position of the thyroid gland requires extensive surgical experience.
At the Ev. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg, we offer the complete range of thyroid and parathyroid operations. We are one of the few hospitals in Germany that have for years also performed minimally invasive thyroid operations using the “ABBA method”. We select very carefully which thyroid disorders are suitable for this surgical method and discuss this with you in detail and without haste beforehand.
For many years, the Ev. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg has been the location of the nuclear medicine practice of Dr. Tilmann Schumacher / Dr. Stefan Merk. Thanks to close networking, direct and personal interdisciplinary exchange is therefore possible throughout your thyroid operation. Beyond this, both partners of the Thyroid Centre work independently. You can find the range of services of Dr. Schumacher’s practice at www.irn-freiburg.de.
For the Department of Surgery, we perform your thyroid operation with great competence and professional expertise, in close coordination with your treating nuclear medicine specialists, endocrinologists, internists and general practitioners and in line with the recommendations of the referring colleagues. Likewise, it goes without saying for us that follow-up examinations after the operation continue with the doctors who also cared for you before the operation.
On the following pages, we would like to give you a brief insight into the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders. Naturally, these insights cannot replace a detailed consultation, for which we will be happy to be available.
Kind regards
Yours
Prof. Dr. B. Rumstadt
Chief Physician, Department of Surgery
