For more than one hundred years, we have lived out the mission of Christian charity to be “close to people”. For us, this means that state-of-the-art medicine and nursing are only one part of the treatment in our hospital. Respectful interaction, individual support and a personal atmosphere are just as important to us. Our aim is to help people – regardless of person, gender, origin or religion.
The company “Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus” comprises the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg (a modern, specialised hospital with 175 beds and more than 13,300 cases per year), the Pflegezentrum Landwasser (a gerontopsychiatric care facility with 108 places) and Haus Landwasser (a rehabilitation facility for young people with mental illness, with 53 places). As a medium-sized hospital, we benefit enormously from transparent, clearly organised structures, dependable contact persons and short distances.
Our guiding principles
What we do day after day is not just a job for us. It is a matter close to our hearts, which we see in a very holistic way. Against this background, we have developed guiding principles that do justice to this aspiration.
Purpose - Why are we here?
Quality - How do we want to fulfil our tasks?
Responsibility - We want to take on responsibility.
Future - Where is our development heading?
Internal cooperation - How do we want to treat each other?
External cooperation - How do we want to treat others?
Our history
1898
Foundation of the Freiburg Deaconess House (Freiburger Diakonissenhaus) in Freiburg-Herdern, from which the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus emerged. Initially it had only the departments of surgery and internal medicine.
1922
Establishment of the new "Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Radiation Therapy" on Hauptstraße in Freiburg-Herdern. Over the decades, radiology and anaesthesia developed out of the other disciplines into departments in their own right.
1925
Foundation of the nursing school.
1929
Owing to a persistent lack of space in the building on Hauptstraße, the obstetric and gynaecological department was relocated to the building of a former private clinic on Marienstraße that had been taken over.
1973
Legal separation of the motherhouse and the hospital following the entry into force of new statutory financing regulations for hospitals. The change of name from "Diakonissenhaus" (Deaconess House) to "Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus" is the result of this separation.
1981
New building of the Diakoniekrankenhaus in the Freiburg district of Landwasser, in which all departments are once again united under one roof. At the same time, the Pflegeheim Landwasser, a specialist gerontopsychiatric care home, and Haus Landwasser, a rehabilitation facility for young people with mental illness, are built and placed under the management of the Diakoniekrankenhaus. On 1 April 1982 the hospital becomes an Academic Teaching Hospital of the University of Freiburg. Since then, many medical students in their final clinical year have received theoretical and practical training at the Diakoniekrankenhaus every year, and they also take their final state examination here.
