Prehabilitation – fit for my operation

Structured training and support programme for gynaecological patients at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus

What is prehabilitation – and why is it so important?

You have an operation planned. How well you recover afterwards depends not only on the procedure itself but also on your physical condition before the operation. This is where prehabilitation comes in – a targeted training and support programme that starts about 4 weeks before your operation. Those who go into an operation well prepared recover faster, have fewer complications and can often return to an active life sooner.

For greater safety. Better healing. Fewer complications.

The better prepared you are, the easier your recovery will be. Invest 4 weeks – for a better quality of life after the operation.

The concept – 4 pillars of preparation

Our prehabilitation consists of four core components. Ideally, all measures start 4 weeks before the date of the operation:

1. Smoke-free before surgery – for better healing

Smoking has a negative effect on wound healing, the risk of infection and the oxygen supply in the body. We therefore recommend stopping smoking at least 4 weeks before the operation.

How can you stop?

  • We can refer you to competent counselling services (e.g. the Präventionsteam Tumorzentrum Freiburg (prevention team) at the Universitätsklinikum Freiburg).
  • Nicotine patches or nicotine chewing gum for nicotine replacement therapy from your pharmacy help immediately.
  • Professional support through a 3-week online programme from “rauchfrei” (registration: www.rauchfrei-info.de) or through the DiGA app (digital health application)
  • “NichtraucherHelden” (prescribed by your general practitioner)

2. Exercise as medicine – guidance from our physiotherapists

Targeted exercise strengthens the circulation, lungs and muscles – crucial for your recovery. Our physiotherapists offer a guided exercise programme.

  • Endurance training
  • Mobilisation to maintain mobility and to practise post-operative mobilisation
  • Breathing exercises to prepare the lungs optimally for anaesthesia

The exercises are individually adapted – depending on age, fitness and the planned operation.

The guided sessions take place once a week (Thursday 11:00, sports room of the Diakoniekrankenhaus) in small groups. Regular participation is recommended; registration is not necessary.

3. Optimise your nutrition – for strength and fast healing

Many patients have an inadequate nutritional status before an operation – often without noticing. A good nutritional status helps to prevent complications and strengthen the immune system.

What we offer:

  • Assessment of your current nutritional status
  • Advice on nutrition before and after the operation
  • “Carbohydrate loading” (carbohydrate intake) on the evening before and the morning of the operation to improve the metabolic state – a modern concept that promotes recovery. For this, we will give you Fortimel Jucy Plus drink supplements to take home.

4. Blood tests – detecting and correcting deficiencies

A simple blood test can help to identify critical deficiencies early, before they have a negative effect on the operation. Iron, vitamin and protein levels in particular are directly related to:

  • wound healing,
  • the risk of infection,
  • recovery time after the operation.

If necessary, you will receive targeted recommendations.
