Outpatient specialist care

Specialised outpatient care (ASV)

for gynaecological tumours

Dear patients,

Cancers of the female reproductive organs require an interdisciplinary treatment strategy. An interdisciplinary treatment strategy is determined jointly by a team with special expertise and experience. It is important that this team also cooperates closely across sectors – that is, between outpatient and inpatient care – in order to provide you with optimal treatment. This is made possible by Specialist Outpatient Care (Ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung, ASV).

ASV at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus is a service for patients with malignant gynaecological diseases that is covered by statutory health insurance. The Diakoniekrankenhaus works closely as a team with doctors in private practice from various specialties and other health professions (e.g. home care services). All team members have demonstrated that they are particularly qualified and highly experienced in this treatment.

In the following patient information, we would like to introduce ASV, the ASV team and our range of services. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

We are here for you together!

On behalf of the entire ASV team

Prof. Dr. Dirk Watermann
ASV team leader
Chief Physician, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg

Outpatient specialist care (Ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung, ASV) – what is it?

Specialised outpatient specialist care (ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung, ASV) comprises the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases that are difficult to treat and which, depending on the disease, require special qualifications, interdisciplinary collaboration and special equipment. Once you are admitted to ASV, a team of specialists from different disciplines takes over your treatment.

What does ASV care include?

Care within ASV (specialised outpatient care) only ever covers the disease in whose treatment the respective ASV team specialises. Complaints directly related to treatment within ASV (side effects of therapy, complications and acute adverse consequences of treatment) are also treated there. Any medical care beyond this takes place outside ASV within the usual structures.

How do I get access to ASV?

A referral is usually required for medical care within ASV. The referring GP or specialist will consult a suitable ASV team and, if appropriate, arrange a first appointment. ASV can also be initiated by a hospital doctor at the end of a hospital stay.

Can you choose your ASV team freely?

In principle, yes – it is even possible to change during ASV care that has already begun. However, the choice may be limited if there are no other ASV teams for the condition concerned in the area.

Who is my contact person in the ASV team and who makes the decisions?

The ASV team (specialised outpatient care, ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung) is led by Prof. Watermann. Together with the Zentrum für Strahlentherapie Freiburg and the Praxis für interdisziplinäre Onkologie & Hämatologie, they form the core team. Where medically necessary, further specialists are consulted. If required, a consultation with the entire core team is possible. The team leader is the first point of contact for patients. If patients opt for this care service, they agree to consult the physicians of the ASV team. Patients are fully involved in the decision-making process. They should therefore write down their questions and any observations relating to their illness in advance, and keep all documents they receive as part of ASV in a safe place.

What additional support services are available?

The ASV team provides information on services that can be helpful in coping with the illness in everyday life. These include, for example, services offered by self-help organisations, social services and non-medical professional groups.

How long does treatment within ASV last?

This varies greatly and depends on the type of illness and the treatment required. It may be that the examinations clarify the exact diagnosis and further medical care then takes place outside the ASV again. Or it may be necessary for treatment by the ASV team to continue over several months or years. Patients can decide at any time to continue their treatment outside the ASV within the familiar structures of standard specialist care.

What happens when ASV ends?

At the end of treatment in ASV, patients receive written information about the results of the treatment and the next steps. Patients should make sure that they receive this information before or at their last visit to the ASV team, or immediately afterwards. And they can ask questions if there is anything they have not yet understood. The doctors providing further treatment are informed about the measures and therapies carried out so far and about the further treatment steps required.
