Authorisation for specialist training and training concept
Through internal and external training measures, all doctors and nurses in the Department of Anaesthesiology undergo continuous further training. This ensures that the necessary, up-to-date specialist knowledge is available at all times.
The Chief Physician of the Department of Anaesthesiology holds full authorisation to provide specialist training in anaesthesiology (60 months) and for the additional qualification in intensive care medicine (18 months), and, together with the Chief Physician of the Department of Surgery, joint authorisation for basic training in surgery for 24 months.
Specialist nursing training
Through our network with several hospitals in the region, nurses at our hospital can take part in the part-time further training programme “Health and Nursing Care for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Nursing (DKG)”.
Practical year (PJ)
As a teaching hospital of the University of Freiburg, the Department of Anaesthesiology of the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus offers medical students of the University of Freiburg the opportunity to complete their practical year in our department. Two places are available per semester.
The practical year in this specialty occupies a somewhat special position, as the Department of Anaesthesiology has no beds of its own apart from the interdisciplinary intensive care unit. Students are therefore trained almost exclusively in the operating theatre and in the intensive care unit.
Since knowledge of the fundamentals, as well as of the risks and side effects, of the individual general and regional anaesthesia procedures is an indispensable prerequisite for practical work in the operating theatre, students should, in addition to practical skills, in particular become familiar with the theoretical foundations of the specialty and base their work in the operating theatre on them. This knowledge is imparted during their placements in the individual surgical areas. By the end of their training, students should be able to perform simple anaesthetics and typical tasks of an anaesthetist under the guidance of a specialist or senior physician. In the intensive care unit, after an appropriate induction phase, students should be able to care for one or two patients under supervision and present them during ward rounds.
