Medical assistant (MFA) training

Career profile: medical assistant

Medical assistants (Medizinische Fachangestellte) are the link between doctor and patient. For patients, they are usually the first point of contact in the hospital and act as the central contact person. They are entrusted with both medical and organisational tasks. They plan and coordinate examination appointments and guide patients through the various diagnostic procedures. They assist medical staff during treatments and examinations. Medical assistants also take on many demanding tasks relating to administration and documentation.

To meet these varied, diverse and responsible requirements, as a medical assistant you should above all bring teamwork skills and a talent for organisation. Other important qualities are open-mindedness, curiosity and an interest in medical matters, as well as enjoyment in helping people. Reliability, accuracy and a high willingness to learn are also important prerequisites for the profession.

During the 3-year dual training, which ends with the final examination before the Landesärztekammer Baden-Württemberg (State Chamber of Physicians), you acquire theoretical and practical skills so that you can later work independently within the scope of your duties. The final examination consists of a written, an oral and a practical part.

Training content

The theoretical training takes place alongside work for 13 hours per week, taught by qualified teachers at the vocational school – in Freiburg, at the Max-Weber-Schule. You will receive lessons in professional studies, medical health and disease studies, laboratory studies, and practice and quality management. General foundation subjects such as German, ethics, communication and social studies round off your theoretical training.

The practical training takes place in the outpatient clinics of the main clinical departments of internal medicine, surgery and gynaecology at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus.
