Oesophagus

In close cooperation with the Department of Gastroenterology within our Visceral Medicine Centre, all patients with diseases of the oesophagus receive interdisciplinary care.

For oesophageal diverticula that cannot be treated endoscopically – e.g. "Zenker's diverticulum" – we remove the diverticulum via an approach through the neck and perform a short incision of the oesophageal muscle.

Diverticula located further down are removed by an operation in the chest area.

For so-called "achalasia", we perform a minimally invasive partial removal of the muscle in the lower section of the oesophagus with simultaneous fundoplication (laparoscopic myotomy and semi-fundoplication).

In the case of a malignant disease that can no longer be treated endoscopically, we perform the following surgical procedures
Removal of the stomach and the lower section of the oesophagus, with reconstruction of the food passage by forming a replacement stomach. This procedure can be performed through an abdominal incision.
Partial removal of the lower oesophagus and the upper section of the stomach, with reconstruction of the food passage using a gastric tube. This procedure is performed both from the abdomen and from the right side of the chest. Wherever possible, we perform the abdominal part of the procedure minimally invasively.
