Outpatient specialist care (ASV) – gastrointestinal tumours (GIT)

Specialised outpatient care (ASV)

for gastrointestinal tumours and tumours of the abdominal cavity (ASV GIT)

Dear patients,

Welcome to the information pages of the outpatient specialist care (ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung, ASV) for gastrointestinal tumours and tumours of the abdominal cavity at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg.

We are very pleased that you are interested!

Outpatient specialist care (ASV) is a new care structure established by the health insurance funds in which affected patients can be looked after with close integration of outpatient and inpatient treatment. In this way, specialist outpatient examinations can be arranged quickly and without complication. We are very pleased to be able to offer you this care structure at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg and look forward to looking after you!

On behalf of the entire ASV team

Prof. Dr. Bernhard Rumstadt
Team leader of ASV GIT
Chief Physician of the Department of Surgery at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg

Outpatient specialist care (Ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung, ASV) – what is it?

In general, ASV (specialised outpatient care, “Ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung”) is a service for patients with certain rare or highly complex diseases. The aim is to organise care optimally and on an interdisciplinary basis across the different sectors of the healthcare system (inpatient and outpatient). For this purpose, an ASV team of specialists from various disciplines has been formed, which can provide all the necessary examinations and treatments as required. The team is divided into a core team and specialist groups that are called in and included in treatment when medically necessary. The service is covered by statutory health insurance.

ASV GIT at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg

ASV GIT covers the diagnosis and treatment of patients aged 18 and over with gastrointestinal tumours and tumours of the abdominal cavity (e.g. malignant neoplasms of the digestive organs).

The ASV team is led by Prof. Bernhard Rumstadt (Chief Physician of the Department of Surgery at the Evang. Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg). As team leader, he forms the core team together with the Department of Internal Medicine of the Evang. Diakoniekrankenhaus, the Zentrum für Strahlentherapie Freiburg and the Praxis für interdisziplinäre Onkologie & Hämatologie in Freiburg. If medically necessary, further specialists are consulted.

If patients decide to take up this care option, they agree to consult the doctors of the ASV team. Patients are fully involved in the decision-making process. Questions and any disease-related observations should therefore be noted down in advance, and all documents received in the context of ASV should be kept safe.

What does ASV care include?

Care within the ASV (ambulante spezialfachärztliche Versorgung – specialist outpatient care) always relates only to the disease in whose treatment the respective ASV team specialises. Symptoms directly related to treatment within the ASV (side effects of therapy, complications and acute adverse effects of treatment) are also treated there. Any medical care beyond this takes place outside the ASV within the usual structures.

How is access to ASV obtained?

As a rule, a referral is required for medical care within specialised outpatient care (ASV). The referring GP or specialist will consult with a suitable ASV team and, if necessary, arrange a first appointment. ASV can also be arranged by a hospital doctor at the end of an inpatient hospital stay.

Can I choose the ASV team freely?

In principle, yes – it is even possible to change during ASV care that has already begun. However, the choice may be limited if there are no other ASV teams for the condition concerned in the area.

What additional support services are available?

The ASV team provides information on services that can be helpful in coping with the illness in everyday life. These include, for example, services offered by self-help organisations, social services and non-medical professional groups.

How long does treatment within ASV last?

This varies greatly and depends on the type of illness and the treatment required. It may be that the examinations clarify the exact diagnosis and further medical care then takes place outside the ASV again. Or it may be necessary for treatment by the ASV team to continue over several months or years. Patients can decide at any time to continue their treatment outside the ASV within the familiar structures of standard specialist care.

What happens when ASV ends?

At the end of treatment in ASV, patients receive written information about the results of the treatment and the next steps. Patients should make sure that they receive this information before or at their last visit to the ASV team, or immediately afterwards. And they can ask questions if there is anything they have not yet understood. The doctors providing further treatment are informed about the measures and therapies carried out so far and about the further treatment steps required.
